I have RCD's, why should I Test & Tag Appliances...

Test & Tag RCD Question

Unfortunately there is a misconception that if you use an RCD, either fixed or portable that you are completely safe from electrocution. We will endeavour to show that this is not the case and provide examples to demonstrate this...

What is an RCD?

The acronym 'RCD' stands for 'Residual Current Device'. You may have also heard some people call it an ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) or RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) or simply a Safety Switch.

Is It Better To Test & Tag Internally or Outsource?

This is a difficult question to answer without sounding mercenary. The fact is though that there are many benefits to outsourcing the testing and tagging to a dedicated business. Following are a couple of benefits to outsourcing:

  • Initial equipment setup costs are removed completely. This can be valued at between $5,000 to $20,000 or more for each person dependent upon equipment being purchased such as PAT Testers, RCD Testers, Printers, Data Recording Software etc;

How Often Do I Need To Have My Equipment Tested?

AS/NZS 3760Table 4outlines the anticipated re-testing frequency for electrical appliances and RCD's.
The re-test frequencies are based on the environment in which the item is used, what it is used for and what type of equipment it is. Frequencies can range from each day (predominately hire equipment or extreme environments) to 5 years for items used in a non hazardous environment where the equipment is not moved and the cord is not subject to flexing (routers and computer network hubs are a good example).
